What’s included


Materials


We have a good stock of drawing and painting materials including oils, acrylics, dry pastels, oil pastels, watercolour, graphite pencils, coloured pencils, charcoal and sketching paper and drawing boards at no extra cost. We can also provide some outdoor sketching easels but please check availability if you are planning not to bring your own. If you wish to bring your own favorite materials and equipment that’s fine.

Other materials such as brushes, palettes and canvases/prepared boards watercolour paper and large drawing paper are generally not included in the price but can be purchased from Lionel as needed. If you want to order specific canvas and board sizes in advance please email your request to us and we will quote you a price.



Refreshments

Morning and afternoon tea and coffee along with delicious home-made cakes and biscuits will be provided during the day.  A light lunch is also included in the price.

Wine is provided during evening slide shows.



What’s not included

At present we are only able to offer non-residential courses.  For a choice of local accommodation and provision of main meals, do look at the places to stay and places to eat pages for a list of options.  We’re more than happy to help you  with bookings.

Mar 26-28  Spring Landscapes in Acrylics.        £170

Spring offers the acrylic painter some fresh colours. Sketch in 2 different outdoor locations and then develop your ideas into acrylic paintings back in the studio. Take advantage of the fast drying paint to change your mind, cover over mistakes and make exciting expressive marks. Beginners and more experienced students are all welcome.


Apr 23-25 Abstract Painting in Mixed Media.     £170

Sketch from the local landscape, including the village, in a variety of drawing media and then develop your ideas into abstract compositions in the studio. An opportunity to explore acrylics, watercolour and collage among other materials. Open to all levels of ability.


July 23-26 Sketching and Painting

                         in the Dale.                                £215


Capture the feel of natural energies and forms on sketching walks on and off the Pennine Way and along tree clad valleys with beautiful waterfalls both large and intimate in scale. Develop these into powerful paintings back in Rose House Studio with one to one guidance, group demonstrations and short expositions from your tutor. Whatever the weather the streams, rivers, trees and clouds animate the grandeur of this unique upland landscape.




Aug 16-18 Abstract painting from Landscape

                        and Buildings.                          £170


Sketch the landscape and its built structures, including the village, then develop your ideas into abstract or semi-abstract paintings in the studio using oils, acrylics, watercolour or pastels. Be inspired by the work and ideas of some of the great abstract painters of the 20th century. Open to all.


 

Sept 17-19 Lead Mining Landscapes.                         £170


Visit a variety of local ex-mining landscapes to sketch tunnel entrances, chimneys and other workings, then make painting responses in the studio. Experience the drama of the lead miners moorland landscape beloved of the poet W.H.Auden.



 

Oct 15-17   Getting the Most Out of Colour.     £170


Be inspired by the rich variety of autumn colours to explore the world of colour in painting. Working in the medium or media of your choice we will look at colour mixing, colour contrast, and colour effects to help you create more powerful paintings.



 

Nov 13-14 A Portrait for Christmas.        £110

The ultimate gift for Christmas – a celebration of a loved one in a portrait drawing or painting. Learn the essential skills required to get a good likeness from photographs and pick up useful tips on bringing a sense of life and character to the image.
