Dates      CourseTitle     Price

April 11-13Spring into Action: Landscape

                              Painting and Drawing                                   £179

Sketching along the Pennine Way following the river South Tyne from Garrigill will give you the inspiration to respond to spring colours in flowers, fields, moorland fells, river and waterfalls. Back at Rose House warm up with home made soup then in the studio develop your impressions into a finished painting in the medium of your choice. Suitable for all levels of ability.

May 18-21   Capturing the Spirit of the Land

                             in oils and acrylics                                £229

Have you ever thought that your landscapes paintings and sketches are missing a certain something? Perhaps you are looking for a stronger sense of character or a more powerful expression of feeling and idea. Using either oils or acrylics Lionel will suggest, demonstrate and illustrate ways in which you can break through conventional representations to something more personal.

June 15-17   Discovering Your Creativity

                             in Nature                                      £179

Here’s an exciting opportunity to get close to nature and create some unusual and beautiful responses with found natural materials. For inspiration we will look at the works of celebrated environmental artists such as Andy Goldsworthy and Chris Drury and discover practical ideas for harnessing light and the weather and for photographing your work. Open to anyone looking for a new way to explore nature.

July  6-9    Abstract and Semi-Abstract  Painting in

                         Landscape                                                   £229

Capture the feel of natural energies and forms on sketching walks on and off the Pennine Way, around the village of Garrigill and out in the valleys and hills. Lionel will help you develop these into expressive and poetic abstract and semi-abstract designs back in Rose House Studio.

Aug 24-27   The Poetic Landscape in Drawing

                           and Painting                                                           £229

Can drawings and paintings be more than just copying what you see? Take inspiration from poets and artists with a poetic vision of the world by sketching out doors on the fell side, river banks streams and meadows then develop your ideas into colour in the studio. Some previous experience of drawing and painting is recommended. Be prepared for 2 or 3 outdoor expeditions of around 3 hours at a time.

Sept 21-23  En Plein Air: Painting in the Village

                           and the Landscape                            £179

In anticipation of an Indian Summer here’s an opportunity to take your paints and easel out of the studio and work directly in front of nature in oils, acrylics, watercolour or pastels. Following artists like Constable, Monet and Piper study the effects of light and shade on colour as they change, sometimes quickly sometimes at a more leisurely pace.

Oct19-22   Studio Painting                                                   £229

Discover some of the secrets of the studio such as under painting, glazing, limited palettes, scumbling, scraffito, sfumato, using complimentary colour contrast and the element of chance. This is an opportunity for the enthusiastic amateur or the semi-professional artist to hone their skills and develop new techniques in any painting medium. Some opportunity for outdoor sketching weather permitting.
